Services
Engineering consulting and BIM
Mynstra does engineering work where AI handles much of the work, such as reading drawings, modelling and quantity take-off. An engineer plans the work, reviews the result and is responsible for it.
Who it is for
What we offer
BIM models of existing buildings
Models made from approved drawings and delivered as IFC: walls, floors, stairs, curtain walls and spaces, with fire ratings, classification and georeferencing. Areas and volumes are calculated according to the Icelandic standard ÍST 50. See Mynstra BIM.
Pipework models, clash detection and penetration plans
2D pipework drawings are turned into a 3D model that is fitted into the architect's model. Clashes are detected, comments to the designers are delivered in BCF format, and a penetration plan is prepared for openings in concrete.
Quantity take-off
Quantities from drawings and models, e.g. pipe lengths by system and diameter, and the number of fittings and manholes. Delivered with marked-up drawings and a summary in Excel.
Review of design and tender documents
Checking drawings and specifications against review checklists, and checking consistency between documents.
Precast elements
Element layout, reinforcement and element drawings, made from the architect's model.
Early-stage options analysis
Comparison of options, e.g. road or pipeline routes, based on geospatial data, planning and cost.
Method and quality
- Each object in a model is traced to a drawing, and we record whether a dimension was read from the drawing, measured to scale or inferred.
- Automated checks and an independent review go through the model before it is delivered.
- An engineer reviews all deliverables.
- Models of existing buildings are based on approved drawings and are therefore not a measured survey. This is stated in every delivery.
Delivery
IFC files (an open standard that BIM software reads), BCF, Excel and PDF. The client gets access to the project on bim.mynstra.is, where the model can be viewed in a browser and the files downloaded.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate are the models?
As accurate as the drawings they are based on. The source of each dimension is recorded, so the uncertainty can be assessed.
What data is needed?
Approved drawings. These can often be obtained from the municipality's drawing archive, e.g. the City of Reykjavík's.
Does this replace designers?
The deliverables are a basis for designers and owners. Responsibility for the design remains with the project's designers.
